Two brothers, Arda and Ediz, are from Whalley. Arda is eight, and Ediz is six years old. Their uncle, Lewis Burns, passed away in 2023. He was only 20 years old and struggled with his mental health.

The boys wanted to help others. They chose YoungMinds, a kids’ mental health charity, and decided on a challenge. Arda and Ediz would skate 100 laps on the ice rink.

Arda loves ice skating and dreams of the Winter Olympics. The boys finished the 100 laps on Monday, February 17, taking them two and a half hours. They felt very tired afterward.

Their mom, Alice Yilmaz, spoke about it, saying the boys were nervous at the start but soon focused on skating. They did 50 laps without stopping, and Alice skated part of the way too.

Alice struggled to keep up, as the boys wanted to finish in one go. They took a short, timed break, and Alice saw the time was 11:11. She felt Uncle Lewis was cheering them on.

At 75 laps, they felt tired and took another break. Alice helped them off the ice before they went back and skated 90 laps. Arda felt like giving up then.

People at the rink helped, and the receptionist made an announcement. People cheered them as they skated the final ten laps. The boys felt very happy.

The boys hoped to raise £300, but they raised over twice that amount! They collected an amazing £755 for the charity.

Alice wants changes in schools. She wants kids to learn about emotions, so they can cope better when older. Kids should discuss feelings daily, which helps them later in life. They will know how to manage feelings. Alice thinks this part is missing now.

The boys entered another contest with YoungMinds and M&S. They will design a sweatshirt, maybe. The winning design sells in M&S stores, with profits going to YoungMinds. It will support kids’ mental health.
