Brierley Homes proposes 49 affordable, energy-efficient homes in Whitby. The project aims to significantly increase local affordable housing.

North Yorkshire Council agreed to provide £2.6m last fall, using money from the Whitby Towns Fund. The plans include five different house designs. These homes are designed to maximize natural light, filling living rooms and bedrooms. Each property will also have a private garden and parking facilities.
Last October, a council member highlighted the energy-saving aspects of the project, noting that the homes use 90% less carbon than average houses. They also mentioned that running these homes will be cheaper.
If the project receives permission, completion is expected by March 2027. The building site is part of a larger project where previous plans approved 290 dwellings.
The plans represent a significant increase in affordable housing. While a typical project might require 15 affordable units, this project offers over triple that amount. Whitby has a pressing need for affordable housing. The council aims for a 100% affordable scheme on the Broomfield Farm site.
Brierley Homes is partnering with Broadacre Homes, who will own and manage these new homes. The plans include a variety of home sizes, ranging from one to four-bedroom houses with floor space between 50 and 106 square meters.
The council emphasizes the importance of one-bed homes, as they are suitable for single people and couples. Currently, there are few affordable options available for this demographic. Two, three, and four-bed homes will also be constructed to meet the needs of local families.
The National Park and housing team raised no objections to the plans. Police suggested removing the community seating, citing potential for negative behavior. The planning authority has not yet set a decision date, as the application is still under review.
