Outdoor arson in Winsford surged, bins and bus stops targeted. Reports increased 175% since 2020 endangering people.

Reports rose over 15% from 2022 to 2024. They jumped 175% between 2020 and 2024. Lockdown rules likely caused the 2020 dip.
Figuring costs is hard, said the fire service, because each case differs. Steve McCormick explained fires waste resources and endanger people too.
McCormick said arson links to bad behavior and illegal dumping plays a role as well. They work with police and local groups to address problem areas together.
November and October see the most arson, possibly due to Bonfire Night. The issue happens all year long, though.
Incidents fell roughly 6% last year. McCormick credited local work in Winsford and sees this as a good sign. However, he thinks improvements are still needed.
McCormick wants people to tell police about suspicious actions. The Northwich and Winsford Guardian asked police for input. People can call Cheshire Police at 101, visit their website at cheshire.police.uk, reach Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111, or find fire safety tips at cheshirefire.gov.uk.
