Memorial service commemorates 67th anniversary of Winter Hill air disaster. Thirty-five Isle of Man residents died in the 1958 crash.

The disaster happened February 27, 1958. Thirty-five Isle of Man residents died then. The crash site was Winter Hill, near Horwich. This location is in Lancashire, England.
That morning, 42 people left Ronaldsway Airport. Only seven people survived the crash, which happened less than an hour after takeoff.
The Rotary Club of Douglas organized the service, which took place in Cooil y Ree Park. More than 55 people attended this event, most of whom lost relatives or friends in the crash.
Jane Falconer, a Rotarian, played bagpipes. David North led the memorial service. Club members read names of the deceased and also gave readings.
Rotarian Reverend Ian Faulds offered prayers. He also spoke on the theme of “waste.” Howard Callow laid a wreath, representing the Rotary Clubs of Douglas and Horwich. John Brown laid a wreath for his family.
The service concluded with tea and scones. Attendees enjoyed this at St Johns’ Greens Café. Simultaneously, another service took place at the Winter Hill crash site, organized by the Rotary Club of Horwich.
Friendships stay strong between Horwich and the Isle of Man. These friendships formed after the disaster.
