Residents protest Somerset Council’s parking fee plan. They fear economic impact ahead of key vote.

Councillors will vote on this change soon, during their budget meeting set for Wednesday, March 5th. The council needs this income to avoid bankruptcy.
Cllrs. Mansell and Wren, who represent Wiveliscombe in Somerset, organized the protest. The protest also opposed charges in Milverton. Demonstrators held signs, chanted slogans, and gathered in the Croft Way car park.
Cllr. Mansell thanked the protesters for their support, noting the media coverage the protest received across Somerset on TV and radio. He believes trying is important for change.
He thinks the protest shows local concerns and highlights problems the charges will cause. Mansell will argue against the charges, explaining local impacts to the council. Many voices together make a stronger message.
Community consultation is a main request, as other Somerset communities are also concerned. Wiveliscombe and Milverton are getting attention, but they are not alone in this fight.
People worry about street parking, fearing charges may cause parking in residential areas, blocking access and limiting parking near homes. Shopkeepers fear shoppers will leave town for out-of-town supermarkets.
A committee rejected the parking charges and asked for consultation and impact assessment; however, the budget includes the expected income for 2025-26.
More work is needed to stop the charges, or at least secure a delay and better review. Cllr. Wilkins attended the protest and said parking costs money to maintain.
He claimed consistent fees would be fairer, and the extra income would ensure self-financing. The parking service could remain properly staffed and well maintained.
