Council scraps parking charges at Cantley Park after backlash over fees impacting sports and park visits.

The council stated the need for financial assistance with park maintenance. Their goal was to have park users contribute to the upkeep of Cantley Park, which hosts various activities including sports, theater, and races.
The parking fee idea received negative feedback from the public. Dr. Steliaros cautioned that it would significantly impact the Archery Club. She urged the council to reconsider the parking fees proposal.
All Sports Wokingham also expressed concerns. They predicted that the fees would lead to a decrease in park attendance. This would potentially burden individuals who regularly participate in sports at the park.
The Labour group launched a petition against the proposed fees, quickly gathering over 2,000 signatures. Subsequently, the Liberal Democrats reversed their position on the matter.
Rachel Burgess criticized the fees as short-sighted, suggesting they would discourage park visitors. She estimated the fees would generate £120,000 annually.
Despite budgetary challenges, the Liberal Democrats ultimately dropped the parking fees. Mark Ashwell emphasized the importance of the park. He did warn of difficult decisions to come.
Stephen Conway aims to collaborate with park groups to develop an equitable solution that benefits all stakeholders.
