Wrexham councillors to decide on reverting the 20 mph speed limit after consultation reveals public preference for 30 mph.

93% of people actually said they want the change back, and the council leaders will decide if it’s a go. If they agree, officers will plan the changes. They’ll also tell everyone about it.
They want to make the switch safely and carefully. Remember when Wales made 20 mph the default speed? That was last April in built-up areas.
People were not happy, and a lot of people signed a petition. It asked to reverse the speed limit changes, as folks felt the government didn’t ask them first.
Now, councils are asking residents what they think. They must also think about possible dangers. “We’ve only reduced speeds before,” a leader said, “Never raised them.” They did a super thorough consultation, he shared.
They wanted everyone to chime in. Most people seem happy to go back to 30 mph. The leader feels good about addressing this issue; they didn’t cause the problem but must fix it.
Increasing speeds has some risks they need to think through. The leader stressed that safety matters most; speed increases accident risks. They need to make sure they get this right now.
Not everyone likes the idea of raising the limit. A 20 mph group voiced their concern online, asking if saving kids wasn’t more important. They said keeping speeds low saves lives; they see this as a life or death matter.
