Wrexham Council will discuss some road changes. They plan to change 52 roads back to 30 mph; currently, these roads are limited to 20 mph. The Executive Board will discuss this today.

A consultation happened to get public opinion. Most people wanted the speed limit increased, with ninety-three percent preferring the 30 mph limit. Council members will consider these results. If approved, officers will plan the changes.

They will launch a public information campaign to inform residents about the changes. They will also plan to phase them in safely. The Welsh Government set the 20 mph limit last year.

It impacted residential and built-up areas, and this policy caused a large public reaction. Over 500,000 signed a petition against it. Now, councils are consulting on reversing this change.

They face new concerns when increasing speeds. Wrexham’s deputy leader, Cllr Dave Bithell, spoke about it. They usually only reduce speed limits.

Bithell stated they extended the consultation to ensure everyone could share inputs. He confirmed many people want the 30 mph return and thinks it addresses a key issue. Bithell also noted crucial risks from increasing speeds.

Driver and pedestrian safety is most important, as higher speeds increase accident risks. They must address this carefully.

However, some disagree with the speed increase; “20s Plenty For Us” argued against it. They believe safety should come before motorists’ convenience and feel it impacts lives.
