Colour and Light is back in York. Watch colorful projections tell York’s history on the city’s buildings until March 2.

This is the show’s third year in York. Last year, it was at the Art Gallery. This year celebrates York’s wildlife, featuring both real and mythical animals.
The show runs 6 PM to 9 PM daily, from February 12 to March 2. It repeats every ten minutes. An accessible hour is 8 PM to 9 PM, with fewer people and lower volume.
The event is very rewatchable, offering 360 projections over 20 days. “Easter eggs” are hidden throughout. The show tells stories of York’s creatures, including Minster’s falcons and city foxes, along with horses from Eboracum and dragons.
The launch was Tuesday night in York Minster’s Chapter House. York BID, the Lord Mayor, and Reverend Maggie McLean spoke, welcoming everyone to the show.
Carl Alsop from York BID said they would travel back in time. People would see rivers and a yew tree forest, as they retell York’s 2,000 years of history.
He said stories feature rats and penguins, while tansy beetles and peacocks also show up. Familiar faces like cats and ducks will appear, along with a bear, a camel, and a dragon.
He hopes people enjoy the show and forget their worries for ten minutes. They launched the show after a blessing, with children pressing a button to start it, as people gathered in the Minster’s South Transept.
The UK government funds the event using the Shared Prosperity Fund. This fund supports culture, community well-being, and local economies.
The Colour & Light event is nightly at York Minster’s South Transept, continuing until March 2.
